How About Some Screens?
Rather than just look at long sector lists, let’s do some screens to be extra sure we did not miss any companies.
I want to eventually build a universe of 200-300 companies.
First I did my favorite screen, which is all US headquartered companies, market caps over $500 million, selling within 25% of their 5-year low. This is the equivalent of the old daily Wall Street Journal - New 52 week low list. That is how we found ideas in the day of the dinosaurs. I prefer to use the 5-year low, not the 52 week low. This screen gives me 179 companies. Many are on the lists I have already presented, but others have problems that I do not want do deal with.
Let’s add these ideas to our universe:
Cognex - CGNX - complex
GLOBALFOUNDRIES - GFS - the alternative do Taiwan?
Tootsie Roll - TR - kind of a battleground stock
Cracker Barrel - CBRL - ok for you yield whores
Ecovyst - ECVT - a big Cove Street name I missed
This is the screen that I stared at every day for 15 years. I helped with a pure low P/B strategy, all we used was a simple P/B screen, under 1.5x, this list is now only 195 stocks, many were already on my lists, but here are a few I missed:
Onintiv - OVV -the old Encana
Avista - AVV - the old Washington Water
Dorian - LPG - let’s not the forget the alternative to LNG
CoreCivic - CXW - prisons
Phinia - PHIN - Borg Warner spin
For you yield whores, let’s look at all yields over 4% which is only 135 stocks:
Wendy’s - WEN - 6% - I forgot this one
Universal - UVV - 5.9% - tobacco broker
Karat Packaging - 4% - KRT - never heard of this company, which is almost impossible
Ethan Allen - ETH - 4.7% - fun industry
Let’s also look for stocks 50% off their 5-year high, even if they have already bounced. This is group of former high flyers, the list is longer at 581. It is important to do different types of screens.
Stanley Black Decker - my old boss rebuilt thr B&D part
Echostar - ECHO - a bandwidth story
Ameresco - AMRC - neat company, I want to find the next AMRC
Toast - TOST - great concept, bad execution
Genrac - GNRC - too tied to housing??
